Bethel Bible School is
the first Pentecostal Theological Institution in India. The Division of world
Missions of the Assemblies of God in the United States of America has
established BETHEL BIBLE SCHOOL in 1927, as the official theological training
institution of the Malayalam District council of the South India Assemblies of
God. It was pioneered under the able leadership of the Rev. John H. Burgess,
who came to India with the message of Pentecostal experience. Bethel Bible
School was opened in June 1927, at Mavelikkara, offering a three year training
for ministry. Later, the Bible school was temporarily shifted to other
locations and finally to the present premises at Punalur in the year 1950.
Bethel Bible College
has been consistently growing academically according to the needs of the
church. A certificate course was offered in the beginning .A one year training
for ministry was offered for women. In 1982 The Board of Directors decided to
upgrade the School to College level by introducing Bachelor of Theology (B.
Th.), which was accredited by Asia Theological Association in 1985. Ever since,
this institution is known as Bethel Bible College. As a major leap in the
development of Bethel College, a Master of Divinity (M. Div.) programme was
introduced in 1995 and subsequently accredited by the ATA. The Master of
Theology (M. Th.) programme was commenced in 2005 and accredited by ATA in
2012.
Under the able
leadership of the former principals, Rev. John H. Burgess, Rev. C. Kunjummen,
Rev. Earl Stubbs, Dr. John S. Thannikkal, Dr. P.S. Philip, Rev. Dr. T.P.
Varghese and the present Principal Rev. K. J. Mathew, the College has trained
hundreds of able ministers for the Kingdom of God. The uniqueness of this
institution is that it has been blessed by a team of educated and committed
teachers. Bethel Bible College is highly esteemed for its academic excellence
and mission emphasis.
