Brisbane School of Theology

Christians of different cultures, ages and denominations make up the BST community and have done for the last 70 years, and we love how this diversity shapes and sharpens us. Yet we share a common commitment to Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and to the truth of the Bible, and we have a common goal of serving and glorifying God, so we’re united in our diversity.
We’re an evangelical college, which means that our beliefs and our lives are entirely shaped by the evangel - literally, the gospel of Jesus Christ. So there are a number of core Christian truths that we teach with great passion and live by with conviction. There are also many secondary issues that aren’t at the centre of the gospel, and in those areas we think it’s important to expose our students to different viewpoints and to encourage intelligent and prayerful reflection. We hope this reflection will also bring greater understanding and appreciation of the theological and historical roots of students’ own denominational heritage. However, when it comes to core Christian beliefs, these are the things that everyone in the BST community agrees on and lives in the light of:

Evangel Seminary

Evangel Seminary (ES) is affiliated under the Evangelical Free Church of China and has a long and enduring history. Previously, ES was located in Canton and was known as Canton Bible Institute (CBI) which was founded to meet the needs of South China. In 1927, the hearts of Christians were set aflame during the 1st Canton Bible Conference and they thirsted for God’s word. Evangelical Free Church Evening Bible School (the previous name of Canton Bible Institute) was born to meet this need. The student numbers rose continuously and to such an extent that by 10th Oct of 1932, Canton Bible Institute was founded to provide full time training to Christians who would dedicate themselves to serve as full time ministers.
Owing to changes in political situations, the institute moved to Hong Kong in 1949. In 1957, by the grace of God, ES moved to the present campus at no. 59 Cumberland Road. Later on, courses were revised and a new program of Bachelor of Theology began in 1965. At the same time, the name of CBI was changed to Evangel Theological College (ETC). In 1992, the program of Master of Divinity was launched. In order to reflect the aims and the academic standard of the training programs, ETC was renamed Evangel Seminary in 1996. Two years later, the program of Master of Christian Studies was launched, followed by the Master of Theology program in 2002.
Through the decades, the Lord has led godly leaders to be presidents of ES, namely, Rev. Arthur G. Lindquist, Mr. Yan-Tak Woo, Rev. Dr. John Pao, Rev. Dr. John Hsu, Dr. Maureen Yeung Marshall, and Dr. Man-Chee Kwok
